Laskey ready to compete

After spending his freshman season playing special teams and working as an emergency safety, Zach Laskey moves back to his more natural position of B-back this spring. Laskey will have to learn in a hurry with only two other scholarship B-backs on the roster this spring. The talented rising sophomore has been working hard to get ready for a chance to compete for some offensive touches this fall.

"I am excited to be back on offense and I have been working hard since Coach Johnson told me in the offseason I was moving to B-back. I started going out and working with the quarterbacks on my own to get the mesh down," Laskey said. "All of the B-backs work really hard and we are all ready to compete with each other."

"This spring is going to be huge competition. Right now (David) Sims is starting and Charles Perkins is two and then me and Matt Connors and we are all working hard to get ready, it should be interesting," he said. "I think we all bring something to the table and throughout the spring it will be an intense competition even on the first day."

After playing both ways at every level of football, focusing on just offense will be a major change for Laskey. He worked at both B-back and safety in fall camp last year.

"I have always played offense and defense since I was kid, but I have always been more of an offense guy, so I am pretty excited to get out there and carry the ball a little bit," he said.

Laskey was also the Jackets punt returner for a large chunk of the season and he is working hard under new special teams coach David Walkosky to get back involved with all the different special teams unites. After just one day of practice, Laskey was an immediate believer in Walkosky.

"Right now I am working at punt returner and kick returner and doing some other areas of special teams. I think what Coach Walkosky brings to the table is huge for us and I think he could help us win a few more games," Laskey said.
