Former Wofford defensive coordinator and secondary coach Shiel Wood is reportedly joining the Georgia Tech coaching staff as safeties coach. Wood coached safeties under new Tech defensive coordinator Nate Woody from 2011 to 2012.

“I’m really excited about adding Shiel to our staff,” Paul Johnson said in a statement. “He comes from a great coaching pedigree at Wofford, where he enjoyed success under our new defensive coordinator, Nate Woody, and as a defensive coordinator himself this past season. I think his experience with Coach Woody and as a defensive play-caller will be a great asset as we install our new defense here at Georgia Tech.”

Wood recruited the central Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama areas for the Terriers during his time as defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator.

Coaching at Georgia Tech under head coach Paul Johnson is a tremendous honor and I look forward to working with our defense under the leadership of Nate Woody,” Wood said. “Our family is excited to join the Georgia Tech community."

Wood's hiring also allows the Jackets to move veteran defensive assistant and ace recruiter Andy McCollum back to coaching his perferred position of linebackers. McCollum will coach inside linebackers while Woody will coach outside linebackers in the new 3-4 defense.

Spartanburg Herald Journal reporter Todd Shanesy confirmed earlier reports JOL had this week about the reunion of Woody or his former protegee.
