Henderson ends crazy day with A&M commitment

Thirty-six hours ago, Texas had three defensive tackles committed in the class of 2014 and Texas A&M had just one, 4-star DeShawn Washington. Tonight, Texas has no committed tackles and the Aggies have two, after Longview's Zaycoven Henderson made a last-minute switch to A&M.

Welcome to Texas, coach Strong.

The commitment concludes a wild day for Henderson, who had originally de-committed from Texas last night after defensive tackles coach Bo Davis left Austin to take the same job at USC. It was expected that Henderson would then commit to Texas Tech ... but he didn't. Instead, he spent most of the day in limbo before talking to new Longhorns coach Charlie Strong this afternoon. After that, it appeared his commitment to Texas was back on.

Then, just hours after the conversation between Henderson and Strong, Kevin Sumlin's familiar "YESSIR!" hit the Twitterverse. The commit was none other than Henderson, who didn't even have an A&M offer in the Rivals.com database before this evening.

"I'm taking my talents to Texas A&M," he said on Twitter a short time later. Sumlin, in the meantime, was watching the Aggie men's basketball team take on Arkansas at Reed Arena.

The addition of Henderson -- a four-star prospect according to Rivals.com and the nation's 21st-rated tackle -- is not only one of the more stunning developments in the 2014 recruiting season, but gives the Aggies a big nose guard (6 feet, 2 inches tall, 300 pounds) that can enter the rotation along with rising sophomores Isaiah Golden and Hardreck Walker. This also allows the Aggies to use Washington and Justin Manning at the defensive tackle slot with Ivan Robinson and Alonzo Williams, were slightly smaller tackles with greater quickness are utilized.

With Henderson's commitment, Texas A&M has 21 commits for the 2014 class and 13 4- or 5-stars. But none of them are more surprising than the most recent.
