FSU commitment named Under Armour All-American
It's been a long wait, but the Godby Cougars (Tallahassee, Fla.) have their first Under Armour All-American. That All-American is four-star linebacker Jacob Pugh, who received his honorary jersey during a presentation at his high school's auditorium on Tuesday morning.
The seventh annual all-star game will be held at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Jan. 2 and televised live on ESPN. Being selected as an All-American was a dream come true, but the nation's No. 15 ranked outside linebacker gave the credit to his team.
"Man, I just thank God for giving me the opportunity because without him it would not be possible. My coaches, team, all my teammates because this is just as much for them, as it is for me today," said the Florida State commitment. "They are the reason I have this honor. I'm doing this for my team and representing Godby."
As if there wasn't enough excitement being selected as an Under Armour All-American, Pugh is the first Cougar to ever play in the national all-star game.
"As a young kid, I watched this game on TV and wondered how could I get qualified," he said. "Earlier this year when I was on a visit, a representative from Under Armour called my coach and said I've been selected to play in the Under Under Armour game. I could not believe it, until now. I'm honored, humbled to play in the game. To be the first Godby player is big. I just want to thank all the coaches, Coach Carr, who is my linebacker coach and Coach Williams who is now at FSU. I miss him, but I'll be with him next year."
What does Pugh hope to accomplish during the game?
"My biggest thing is just to go out there and compete, but have fun. The toughest adjustment will be to just learn the plays, but it shouldn't be that hard," said Pugh. "I can't wait. I love going up against the best."
As one of 80 players selected, Pugh is looking forward to competing with the best and plans to do a little recruiting while he is there.
"Yeah, I'm going to talk with a lot of guys over there about FSU. I mean it's their decision, but I'm certainly going to throw it in there about FSU and what we are doing there at Florida State," he said. "I want to get over there in Tampa and get to know all the other players and help get some great players to hopefully play next to me."
Last weekend, his future school crushed Bethune-Cookman to move to 3-0 on the season. After watching FSU's first three games what are his impressions of the new defense under Jeremy Pruitt?
"I love that defense. It's a defense that is straight ahead and like to get to the ball and is very physical," said Pugh. "I really like the defensive scheme with Coach Pruitt because the linebackers can pass rush and drop in coverage. I can't wait to get there."
Pugh talks with Pruitt, his main recruiter, often and says the conversations are to make sure everything is going well with his season and check on schoolwork. Pugh currently maintains over a 3.0.
Pugh will join another FSU commitment Kain Daub of Sandalwood (Jacksonville, Fla.) as an Under Armour selection.
