Houston makes it official
Sumner Houston picked up an offer from Oregon State. Today he committed to the Beavers.Just a couple of weeks ago Concord (Calif.) De La Salle defensive end
Houston visited Oregon State about a month ago so he's seen the campus and gotten a feel for what college life in Corvallis is like. After thinking things over for a while he decided that he knew what he wanted to do.
"It was probably around 11 this morning [when he committed]," Houston told BeaverBlitz.com. "I was at home. We had practice today but I'm planning on coming up to visit sometime soon. I'm not sure when. I was there at the beginning of the summer.
"I felt like it was a great place and I like the work ethic they have. That's very much like it is at De La Salle High School. I just like it up there. I like the rainy weather and the all-around experience. In California it rains sometimes but I like a little colder weather."
Houston said the Beaver coaches are recruiting him as a lineman without specifying whether they will use him on the offensive or defensive side of the ball. They believe the 6-foot-3, 260-pound prospect ultimately has the versatility to play on either side.
The coaching staff was a major factor in his decision.
"My recruiter and the person for my area was Coach Read. He was the one who gave me the offer. Coach Joe Seumalo, I liked him a lot, too. I worked with him at one of the camps. Coach [Mike] Riley is a really good guy, too."
Army, Cal Poly, Nevada, New Mexico State and UC Davis were the other schools to offer Houston over the course of the recruiting process.
