Bears offer 3-star defensive tackle Tony Mekari who still sounds pretty set on Arizona
Tony Mekari likes Arizona a lot. Enough that he says as much a half dozen times during a 20-minute interview.
The 3-star Westlake High defensive tackle committed to the Wildcats at the end of June, and since, his recruitment has crawled to a standstill.
"It's not shut down, but I'm committed. It's not like I'm going and looking around," Mekari told GoldenBearReport.com this week. "I took my unofficial to Arizona and haven't done anything after that. I like Arizona a lot. After my commitment, I stopped looking and following up with other schools."
That didn't stop California defensive line coach Barry Sacks from trying. The Bears defensive assistant offered the 6-foot-3, 260-pound lineman this week on a veritable cold call.
It was the first time the pair had spoken.
"I mean, I'll have to call him back and talk to him," Mekari said. "I like Arizona a lot, so we'll have to see."
So much for that "stopped following up with other schools" thing.
According to Mekari the conversation was short and sweet.
"He just said that I'm the kind of player he wants at Cal. He likes the way I'm playing, how I pursue the ball, my work ethic," Mekari said.
Enough that the Bears are trying to get the Southern California big man up to Berkeley for a visit. There were rumors of a Jan. 18th visit, but Mekari says nothing has been set up.
"Again, I like Arizona a lot."
