Texas safety Sam receives UNC offer
Allen (Texas) linebacker Christian Sam is a big, athletic defensive standout that could see time at the safety and linebacker spots on the college level.
At least that's how the North Carolina Tar Heels envision things.
"They told me I'd probably start off at the safety spot. They'd want to grow me into a safety, linebacker hybrid type player," said Sam.
Anyone who's followed a Larry Fedora coached defense, whether it be at UNC or Southern Miss knows that Fedora looks for versatile athletes to fill out his 4-2-5 defensive schemes.
His linebackers often look and play like safeties and vice-versa making Sam a target for the Tar Heel coaching staff.
In fact, Sam compares himself favorably to a guy who just got selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
"I'd probably say Alec Ogletree. He's a big athletic linebacker," said Sam. "I'm aggressive. I like to use my speed and quickness."
Sam has a plethora of offers from schools across the nation, meaning he can pretty much pick whatever situation feels most comfortable for him.
But the offer he recently received from North Carolina meant a lot and he expressed that when speaking with Tar Heel Illustrated.
"It actually kind of means a lot. I've done my research on them. They have great academics. They put people in the lead," said Sam. "They're trying to get back to where they used to be and it meant a lot when the coaches offered me."
The Texas native is in no hurry to make any decisions regarding his recruitment. It's more important to Sam that he gather as much information as possible so that when he's ready to tell the world where he's going to school, he won't have any regrets.
"I want to narrow down my list after spring ball. So hopefully I can come close to making a decision but I don't want to make the wrong choice," said Sam. "The atmosphere, how I feel on the campus. Do I fit in even when I'm not playing football, do I really like it? The coaching staff, can I trust them? Do I actually get along with them instead of just a strict football relationship?"
Sam has relied on his family members, in particular his brother, to help him think through all the different scenarios before pulling the trigger on a commitment.
"Their telling me to take my time and make sure I make the right choice. You know academics are very important in this process because football doesn't last forever," said Sam.
Sam plans on visiting an SEC school and a Pac-12 school in the near future but that shouldn't be taken as an indicator in determining who's in the lead for his football services.
"I plan on going to Ole Miss this summer and visiting them and Arizona State," said Sam. "I don't really have a top school list right now. Everyone's pretty much the same."
