Sandberg focusing on the present
Cord Sandberg is one of the top quarterback recruits in the nation.
The Bradenton, Fla., standout is rated as a four-star prospect, the nation's No. 10 dual threat quarterback and has 16 scholarship offers.
But right now Sandberg is not focused on any of that. His current goal is helping Manatee High School advance in the Class 7A State Baseball Playoffs and hopefully winning a state championship on the diamond as well.
"I haven't been able to focus on (recruiting) too much really," Sandberg said. "Coaches get in contact with me and I try to stay in contact with those guys and talk to them. I try to a couple of times during the week. Baseball takes up most of my time during the week. You have to work if you want to be really good at it."
Sandberg, the son of former Boston Red Sox minor leaguer and University of Florida standout Chuck Sandberg, is hitting .356 with one home run and 16 RBIs on the season. The Hurricanes square off against Venice in the Regional Semifinals on Tuesday.
On the gridiron, Sandberg has picked up offers from Arizona, Auburn, Baylor, Cincinnati, Clemson, Illinois, Iowa State, LSU, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Central Florida, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and Western Kentucky.
But football may not be his only opportunity at the next level. A few schools have expressed interest in him pursuing baseball.
"I've talked to baseball coaches from UCF and Miami in Florida," Sandberg said. "They said if for some reason I wanted to take that route and play college baseball that they would definitely be interested. If for some reason I was blessed enough to do something with the Major League Draft I guess that would be an option too."
One of Sandberg's early football offers came from Mississippi State, where he hopes to visit this summer after his baseball season concludes.
