Woods leaves GT, holes to fill at SDE

One-time four-star defensive end prospect Jordan Woods has left the Georgia Tech football program. Woods signed with the Jackets in the 2016 recruiting cycle as a late commit a week before National Signing Day over Tennessee and South Florida.

Head coach Paul Johnson confirmed the news to Jacketsonline.

"Jordan asked for his release and I think he wants to find somewhere else to play," Johnson said.

Woods missed his freshman season with a shoulder injury and surgery and was buried on the depth chart this spring as the fourth strongside end battling with walk-ons for playing time. Starter Antonio Simmons and backups Anree Saint-Amour and Tyler Merriweather were ahead of him. Defensive line coach Mike Pelton referred to Woods as being very raw and needing a lot of work before he would be ready for the Jackets' rotation at end.

Looking ahead the Jackets signed strongside ends Cortez Alston and Kelton Dawson in the 2017 signing class who will compete with Merriweather for the starting spot in 2018 along with any additional signings in the 2018 class. Saint-Amour should be the starter at the rush end position.

One potential landing spot for Woods could Louisville. His high school head coach Stephen Field was just hired away from FAMU by Bobby Petrino two weeks ago to working the Cardinals recruiting office. Woods would have to play a year and graduate from a JUCO to avoid sitting two years if he wants to play at an ACC program.
