November 19, 2012Georgia Tech is headed back to the ACC Championship game. After knocking off four ACC foes in a row, the Jackets will face Florida State for the first time since 2009. The Jackets needed either a Miami to lose to Duke this week or the Canes to self-impose a post-season ban. Monday morning Miami announced for the second straight year that they would not accept a post-season berth because of looming NCAA penalties.
Paul Johnson knocked off the Seminoles in 2008 in Atlanta and 2009 in Tallahassee in his only two games against Florida State as Tech's head coach. This is the third ACC Coastal Division title for Georgia Tech under Coach Johnson and the second outright division title.
"Playing for an ACC championship was one of our goals when we began the season, so we are pleased that we will have that opportunity," Johnson said in a statement. "I'm proud of our players and coaches who, when things weren't going too well early, remained focused and determined."
Both Florida State and Georgia Tech square off with top ten SEC rivals this week as the Seminoles face Florida in Gainesville and Tech travels to Athens to face Georgia who is still in the mix for a trip to the National Championship game.
Georgia Tech is 1-1 in ACC Championship games losing in 2006 to Wake Forest in Jacksonville and beating Clemson in 2009 under Paul Johnson in Tampa. Florida State won the first ACC Championship game in 2005 under then coach Bobby Bowden, but lost in 2010 under then first-year coach Jimbo Fisher to Virginia Tech.
The Hokies or Jackets have played in every ACC Championship game representing the Coastal Division since it began in 2005.
Georgia Tech travels to Athens this weekend to face Georgia in the 106th meeting between the two teams. Coach Johnson says his team is focused on the #3 Bulldogs and not the ACC title tilt.
"Playing Florida State for the ACC title is something that we will put on hold until Saturday night," said Johnson. "Right now, we are focused on playing the No. 3 team in the nation on the road Saturday."
