Horns in a DB recruiting frenzy
What a turnaround it's been for the Texas Longhorns in the area of defensive back recruiting.
After not extending a formal scholarship to any DBs in February and March, Texas has really picked up the pace of late. UT offered two players in early April, one of which recently gave a commitment (Antwuan Davis). Last week, the Longhorns extended a scholarship offer to in-state prospect Chevoski Collins and on Tuesday, Texas added an out-of-state DB to its offer list.
Cornerback Cole Luke, one of the hottest defensive back prospects in the entire country, was paid a visit by Texas defensive backs coach Duane Akina at Chandler (AZ) Hamilton High School on Tuesday. Before the day had ended, Luke had picked up a scholarship offer.
Texas joins the likes of Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Cal, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Purdue, San Diego State, UCLA, Utah, Vanderbilt and Washington as programs that have offered. Luke continues to keep an open mind, but does have a few schools that have caught his attention.
"Some that are standing out would be Washington, Cal, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas," Luke said. "But I'm still open to everyone and everyone."
Texas first began contacting Luke in February, letting him know he was a prospect that was high on their list. Luke took an unofficial visit to Texas in April for the Longhorns' spring game. He was joined by his uncle, former NFL All-Pro safety Darren Woodson, and Luke said he liked everything he saw on that visit.
"Probably everything," Luke said when asked what stood out. "Everything was top notch for me. From the facilities to the way they play."
The 6-0, 165-pound Luke is a Rivals250 member and he's ranked as the nation's 17th best cornerback prospect overall. As more schools enter the picture, he plans to continue to weigh his options.
"The next step is to try and get a few more (offers) that I've been waiting on, and then taking some visits and narrowing it down," Luke said.
