ATLANTA - Georgia Tech head football coach Paul Johnson agreed to a one-year extension to his current contract, which will now carry through the 2016 season.

The extension restores the agreement to the 7-year length the school had negotiated with Johnson in December of 2008.

"It goes without saying how much we value what Paul Johnson continues to do for the Georgia Tech program and the energy he has created within the Yellow Jacket family," athletic director Dan Radakovich said. "We remain committed to Paul in every way, and we foresee a long-term relationship with much continued success in the coming years."

In his second season with the Yellow Jackets, Johnson's team is 10-1, ranked seventh in the BCS and will play for the ACC championship in Tampa (Fla.) Dec. 5. Johnson is 19-5 since taking over the Georgia Tech program in December, 2007. His winning percentage at Tech (.792) is the highest in the history of the Yellow Jacket football program.

"We appreciate the confidence Dan Radakovich and the Georgia Tech administration have shown in our program," Johnson said. "We look forward to the opportunity to continue to build the program at Georgia Tech."

Johnson, whose career record is 126-44 in 13 seasons, is a candidate for the Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year Award and the George Munger National Coach of the Year Award.
