Hokies strike with huge DE commit
Virginia Tech picked up a late commitment just after camp on Saturday afternoon. The latest addition is a big one for the Hokies, a Rivals250 prospect who decided just before he departed this afternoon.
"I was ready to leave and it was on my mind, I can't come all this way down here without committing, they're my top school," Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson defensive end Jarontay Jones. "I can't come; drive nine hours in the car.
"The first person I told I think was Coach Beamer. He was happy. He didn't want to let me go. I told the rest of the staff too, Coach Gray and everybody. They were happy too."
So, why the Hokies?
"It's just the right place for me," he said. "Everything about the school is great, for my life it's a great opportunity.
"I've always liked Virginia Tech and wanted to take a visit down there, so when I finally got my chance, I knew it was the place for me."
This was Jones first visit to Blacksburg and he broke down that fact.
"I didn't really know much about the school, but they were already my top school, but seeing it made me want to commit more," he said. "It's everything about it. It's the beautiful facilities, the coaches and everything about the school, it's so great."
Coaches were a factor for the four-star prospect.
"All the coaches are cool," he said. "They've got a great coaching staff, Coach Gray, I love him like a father and Coach Beamer, him being my head coach is great too. He's got so much wisdom and is a great coach. He's been there so long."
Tech has proposed the possibility of Jones playing as a true freshman if he proves he's capable.
Meanwhile, how important was it to make a decision with his friend Davion Tookes in attendance too?
"Davion is pretty important, to come up here and look around, it was pretty big, we got to see the academics and everything together.
"I just love the decision I made, It is just there for me."
